My name is Mattie Loyce and I am a interdisciplinary artist/curator and community advocate originally from and currently based in San Francisco, CA. As a career community development worker and creative practitioner, I utilize holistic and creative practice as a tool for community mobilization. As a San Franciscan; community arts, community advocacy, and uplifting the resilience of marginalized populations are ideological pillars of my work ethos and foundation.

PROFESSIONAL TIMELINE

For the last 15 years Mattie has been working in community development and interdisciplinary curation in the US and internationally. She began her dual career in Boston, MA, working in community mental health directly out of undergraduate in 2012, while simultaneously founding her own ‘guerilla art gallery’, Mission Gallery which supported underrepresented emerging BIPOC artists. In 2017, she received a Masters of Arts from Goldsmiths, University of London in Creative and Cultural Entrepreneurship with a focus in Leadership Studies. Following the Masters, during 2018-2020, she became Curator and Artistic Program Manager at 198 Contemporary Arts and Learning in Brixton, London, UK.

In 2020 Mattie returned to the US and swiftly joined DISH SF, permanent supportive housing organization in San Francisco, CA. At DISH she leads the Community Development Department; stewarding resident leadership, harm reduction, restorative justice and creative and holistic program initiatives across 9 permanent supportive housing sites, housing approximately 850 adults and families.

Since her return to the US, she continued to contribute to the fine arts community by regularly fulfilling the role of moderator, panelist and visiting lecturer at museums, galleries, and academic institutions. She served as a judge for the California Arts Council: Individual Artist Grant, Legacy Tier in 2021. She was the inaugural Curator in Residence at Community Arts Stabilization Trust in 2023 and again at  CounterPulse in 2024 with her project the Tenderloin Community Quilt., award recipient of the California Humanities: Humanities for All grant award in 2024
